Impression of an outsider at the Rêve Pavilion, Surrey Sunflower clinic
I had the opportunity to observe Mark Mathews at work using his skills and knowledge as qualified Osteopath, Kinesiology and founder of the Sunflower Trust.
The first patient I met is a young millionaire who finds it difficult to cope with everyday life and spare time. The first thing he said to me was that Mark did a brilliant job on his back. The treatment today was more based on Neuro-Linguistic Programming (NLP) and after being at work with the patient the session finished with advice and exercises for at home.
The second patient is a young lady who will start university in a few weeks. She has been a patient for years as she had problem with dyslexia. Being dyslexic himself Mark told me that he has a special interest in helping children with learning difficulties for which he has developed the sunflower trust. I am that sure Mark is proud to hear that this lady is now going to university.
I was amazed to hear another success story when I met Mark’s third patient that morning. He is an MS patient who was not able to cross the road when he first came to visit Mark. Today he came to see Mark, as he was exhausted and very stiff. As a music lover he visited the Proms in London on his own. It was very long day and exhausting day even for a fit person.
The next patient, a retired director and keen golfer, is visiting Mark for discomfort in shoulder and knee whilst playing intense golf. He told me that because of Mark’s treatment he is able to enjoy playing golf.
A young lady in a wheelchair came in. On her first visit she was not able to move as she was in a coma after a traffic accident. Her parents said that she recovers well and that Mark’s treatment supports that.
The last patient for the morning is lady who is visiting Mark for the second time. She came the first time to visit Mark as she was in a lot of pain and very stiff from her long journey from Australia. She was now able to move and pick up her hobbies and activities without any major discomfort.
It was a great opportunity to see how Mark approaches every patient personally and that every treatment was individual adjusted to suit the patient. As an outsider I had a brilliant opportunity to see the inside of a busy clinic where every person was treated with respect and care and welcomed by friendly staff. As student in sports massage it was a great experience to see so many different techniques, skills and knowledge used so fluently and naturally.
I would like to thank everybody from the Rêve Pavilion and their patients for this opportunity for my work experience.
